Alumni History

A little history on the inception of the Alumni Association by Bob Murray '59:

In 1975 I lived in Long Island when Brother Lawrence called and asked me to give a speech at the 20th anniversary of the founding of the school. After the dinner Brother McKenna, the founding principal, said, “Bob, we do not have an Alumni Association and I want you to start one”. I said I would help and Brother said, “I don’t want you to help, I want you to do it”. “Yes Brother” was my response.

In 1976 Brother McKenna passed away and I was transferred to IBM HQ in Franklin Lakes, where we built our home. By 1977 Brother Lawrence and I began to build alumni data bases with the help of Bob Belger ’62. In 1978 we placed an ad in the Bergen Record Sports section for all Alumni to come to the BC gym for a formation meeting. More than 100 Alumni attended and agreed to support the formation of the Association. At that meeting Ted Fariniello ’60 nominated me for president, and by voice vote I was named the 1st president. We began planning for our 20th reunion of the ’59 class. By 1960 we were incorporated thanks to John Horan, Esq.

I continued to serve until our son, Rob ’84, graduated when Brother Lawrence and I put in the two year term for Alumni president. I continued as Trustee and Chairman of the nominating committee until Mike Maron, thoughtfully, created the new way to elect Association officers.

Scholarship Award

The Alumni Scholarship Award was established by the Bergen Catholic Alumni Association in 2013 in order to honor the graduating seniors who best typify the Bergen Catholic man. Recipients are selected by a poll of the faculty. The award is presented at the Baccalaureate Mass each year since its inception in 2013.
